A Lost Dog, a Hidden Alligator, and a Rescue Nobody Will Forget

What began as a nighttime search for a missing Darwin quickly became one of the most frightening missions we have ever experienced.

Darwin, a six-year-old rescued hound, broke free from his leash and disappeared. For five long days, he remained on the run while his worried momma continued searching and refused to give up hope.

Because lost dogs often hide or travel after dark—especially during Florida’s hot weather—Quick Drone Services joined the search using a thermal-equipped drone. Thermal imaging allows us to detect heat signatures in areas that are difficult or dangerous to search on foot, including thick vegetation, wooded areas, marshes, and the edges of ponds.

During the nighttime search, the drone located Darwin near the Westrock paper mill property near a retention pond. Then the situation suddenly became terrifying.

An alligator was dangerously close to him.

From the air, we could see just how serious the danger was. Darwin appeared unaware of how close he was to the alligator, and everyone watching knew the situation could change in an instant. It was a powerful reminder that missing pets face dangers their owners may never see—traffic, extreme heat, wildlife, deep water, and unfamiliar terrain.

Fortunately, Darwin escaped the encounter unharmed.

Although he was not captured that night, the search provided valuable information about his location and movements. His family remained determined, and the following night, after five exhausting days of worry and searching, Darwin was finally captured and brought to safety.

This rescue had the happy ending everyone had been praying for, but it also demonstrated why time is so important when a pet goes missing. A dog may be frightened, confused, and operating entirely on survival instinct. Even a normally friendly pet may run from its owner, hide during the day, or refuse to respond when called.

If you see a missing dog, avoid chasing it. Report the location, direction of travel, and time of the sighting as quickly as possible. That information can help search teams establish the animal’s travel pattern without pushing it farther away.

Darwin’s family never gave up—and that persistence helped bring him home safely.
